Fertilizers are natural or manufactured materials applied to soil or directly to plant tissue to supply the nutrients crops require for healthy growth and maximum yield. They are broadly categorised by their nutrient content, formulation type, and origin. Macro-nutrient fertilizers supply the three primary nutrients: nitrogen (N), which drives vegetative growth, leaf area development, and protein synthesis; phosphorus (P), which supports root system development, flowering, and energy transfer within the plant; and potassium (K), which regulates water uptake, stomatal function, disease resistance, and fruit quality. Secondary and micronutrient fertilizers supply calcium, magnesium, sulphur, zinc, manganese, boron, iron, copper, and molybdenum — elements required in smaller quantities but critical to specific plant functions. Organic fertilizers derive their nutrients from biological materials and improve soil structure and microbial life alongside providing nutrition. Biofertilizers contain living microorganisms that enhance nutrient availability in the soil. Formulations include granular, liquid, powder, and water-soluble concentrates, each suited to different application methods and cropping systems.
